Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio made waves when they released their seventh entry in the famed Yakuza series, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and it included turn-based fighting, but a new mod has been introduced that re-inserts the brawling style of the originals.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon made many changes that could have disturbed the Yakuza fanbase, including the change of combat system, the change of the face of the franchise — swapping mainstay Kazuma Kiryu for Kasuga Ichiban — and the overall feel of the title felt fresh with new ideas for a series seven games deep. But yesterday, a new mod was unleashed onto the internet that takes the new turn-based Dragon Quest-inspired battle system and reverts it to the former brawling style of the previous games and the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios Judgement series.
The ‘Like a Brawler’ mod is platformed on NexusMods, and it does have a few shortcomings. For one, it’s still in the Beta stage, so fans will undoubtedly run into some issues. Second, fans will need to deploy purchased copies of the game to install the mod; Xbox Game Pass versions of the game will not work. The last shortcoming details the fact that fans can’t play as the other party members; only Ichiban will be playable with the new Like a Dragon mod.
Although the mod has made it into the wild, fans of the new turn-based style from Like a Dragon are in luck. The upcoming Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth — the latest title set to release on January 26, with both Ichiban and Kiryu as protagonists — utilizes the Dragon Quest turn-based gameplay of the seventh entry. While it will be the first time Kazuma Kiryu will be playable in the turn-based point of view, it’s the second title in the series that utilizes the new combat style.
Fans can head over to the NexusMods site for more information on the new Like a Brawler mod and will even find a tutorial on how to install it properly.
